Freedom Park Isikumbuto

Project Details

  • City: Johannesburg, South Africa
  • Year: 2010
  • Discipline: Architecture

The building is comprised of a series of interconnected boulders that resonate with several African ideas and with the site itself, which has rock outcrops, ridges and boulders present.

The hard-landscaped surfaces which surround the building have been gently shaped to echo the boulder forms of the building and to extend the boulder theme into the landscape.

The exhibition space, which leans and folds through the large volumes and compressed spaces, leads to a cave-like feeling inside it.
